Round pearl necklace

Round pearls hold their line. Strung close they draw an unbroken curve across the collarbone. Spaced along a chain they appear to float. This is the shape that has meant certainty for a hundred years, and nothing about that has changed.

What is a round pearl necklace?

A round pearl necklace uses cultured pearls classified as round or near-round. Roundness is measured as the variation between a pearl's largest and smallest diameter, and a pearl is graded round when that variation stays under two percent.

Fewer than one in a hundred cultured pearls reaches that standard, which is the entire reason round pearls cost more than any other shape.

Why are round pearls more expensive?

Scarcity and matching, in that order. A mollusk does not produce a sphere reliably, so round pearls are pulled from a much larger harvest. Then, for a strand, hundreds of round pearls have to be sorted until enough agree on size, color and overtone.

Most of the price of a matched round strand is in the sorting rather than in the growing. This is also why a single round pearl pendant costs so much less than a strand of the same pearls.

Which pearl types give the roundest pearls?

  • Akoya — grown around a round shell bead in Japan, and the most consistently spherical cultured pearl there is.
  • South Sea — also bead-nucleated, at much larger sizes, with a softer satin luster.
  • Tahitian — bead-nucleated and dark, though a higher proportion come out baroque.
  • Freshwater — usually grown without a bead, so genuinely round freshwater pearls are the exception rather than the rule.

Which round pearl necklace style should you choose?

Beaded strands and chokers

Round pearls strung continuously, where the unbroken line is the point. This is the classic reading, and the construction where matching quality is most visible.

Floating and spaced necklaces

Pearls set at intervals along a fine chain. Round pearls suit this better than any other shape, because a sphere reads correctly from every angle and needs no orientation.

Single pendants

One round pearl on a chain. The most affordable way to own a genuinely round pearl, since a single pearl carries no matching premium at all.

Why buy a round pearl necklace from Grande Lilith

Round is the shape people pay a premium for, which makes it the shape most loosely described. Near-round is routinely sold as round.

  • Shape stated as one of eight provenance markers on every product page, alongside grade rather than merged with it.
  • Sourcing named to place: freshwater from Zhuji, Akoya from Japan, Tahitian from French Polynesia.
  • Partners vetted by our GIA-certified pearl specialist, on working conditions as well as quality.
  • Nickel-free, lead-free and cadmium-free clasps and settings on gold, silver and stainless steel.
  • Designed in Paris. Thirty days to change your mind, and every order arrives in a magnetic pouch.

Frequently asked questions

Are round pearls better quality than baroque?

No. Round pearls are rarer, which makes them more expensive, but quality is luster first, then surface cleanliness and nacre thickness. A baroque pearl with strong luster is a better pearl than a round one without it.

What is the difference between round and near-round?

Round means under two percent variation between the largest and smallest diameter. Near-round allows more, and the difference is invisible to most people at normal viewing distance but significant in price.

What size round pearl necklace should I buy?

For a strand, 7 to 8 mm is the classic proportion. For a single pendant, 8 to 10 mm reads better, because a lone pearl needs more presence to be the point of the necklace rather than a detail on the chain.

How do you check if pearls are well matched?

Lay the strand on a white surface and look along it rather than at it. Size steps, color shifts and dull pearls become obvious from that angle in a way they never are in a photograph taken from the front.

Are round pearl necklaces formal?

A matched strand reads more formal than any other pearl shape. A single round pendant or a spaced floating necklace does not, and those are the versions most people wear daily now.
