What is a Tahitian pearl bracelet?
A Tahitian pearl bracelet uses cultured pearls grown in the black-lipped oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, in the lagoons of French Polynesia. The oyster produces the dark nacre itself, so the color belongs to the animal rather than to a dye bath.
They run 8 to 16 mm, considerably larger than Akoya, because the host oyster is larger. Even a few pearls on a chain give a bracelet real presence at that scale.
Why does a dark pearl work well at the wrist?
Because your hands move constantly, and the overtone on a dark pearl only reveals itself when the angle changes. A Tahitian pendant sits still against the chest. A Tahitian bracelet is in motion all day.
Dark pearls also disappear less against a sleeve than pale ones do, so the bracelet reads clearly whether your arms are bare or covered.
Are Tahitian pearls naturally dark?
Yes. The color comes from the oyster's own nacre, and it is in the pearl rather than on it. Other dark pearls sold as black are dyed or treated freshwater pearls, which is legitimate provided it is disclosed.

Dark pearls threaded on cord rather than chain, sitting close against the wrist. The most relaxed construction, and the one that reads as holiday rather than as evening.

Pearls set at intervals along a chain, so each one has room to show its overtone individually rather than reading as a single dark band.
How should a pearl bracelet fit?
With about half an inch of room past your wrist measurement. Loose enough to rotate, close enough that it does not slide over the hand. Measure just below the wrist bone. Larger pearls take up more of the circumference, so a Tahitian strand needs an extra half inch over a fine one.

Can you wear a Tahitian pearl bracelet every day?
Yes. Tahitian nacre is thick, which makes these pearls more forgiving than most for regular wear. Take the bracelet off before washing dishes or applying hand cream, and wipe it with a soft cloth afterwards.
What is a peacock pearl?
Peacock describes a green overtone floating over a dark bodycolor. It is the most sought-after color in Tahitian pearls and commands the highest prices within that category. The name refers to the overtone, not to the pearl type.
Do Tahitian pearls fade?
Naturally colored pearls do not, because the color is in the nacre rather than on it. Dyed pearls can lose color over years, which is another reason treatment disclosure matters at the point of purchase.
Are Tahitian bracelets formal?
Less formal than you would expect from the price. A corded strand of dark pearls reads relaxed and works with bare arms in summer. It is the necklace versions that carry an evening register.
Which wrist should you wear it on?
