Why are round pearls more expensive?
Scarcity and matching, in that order. A mollusk does not produce a sphere reliably, so round pearls are pulled from a much larger harvest. Then, for a strand, hundreds of round pearls have to be sorted until enough agree on size, color and overtone.
Most of the price of a matched round strand is in the sorting rather than in the growing. This is also why a single round pearl pendant costs so much less than a strand of the same pearls.
Which pearl types give the roundest pearls?

No. Round pearls are rarer, which makes them more expensive, but quality is luster first, then surface cleanliness and nacre thickness. A baroque pearl with strong luster is a better pearl than a round one without it.
