Black pearl necklace

A black pearl necklace reads differently from every other pearl. Against dark clothing it sharpens. Against skin it warms. It is the necklace women buy once they already own the white one and want something else entirely, and it is the fastest way to make pearls look contemporary rather than inherited.

What is a black pearl necklace?

A black pearl necklace uses cultured pearls with a dark bodycolor. The term covers a range rather than a single color: true black is rare, and most black pearls are gray, green, aubergine or blue-gray with a secondary overtone floating over the base color.

That overtone is what makes a dark pearl worth looking at twice. It moves as you move, which a white pearl does not do in the same way.

Are black pearls naturally black?

Tahitian pearls get their dark color naturally, from the black-lipped oyster Pinctada margaritifera that grows them. The color comes from the mollusk's own nacre. Other dark pearls on the market are dyed or treated freshwater pearls, which is legitimate as long as it is disclosed.

This is the single most useful thing to know when shopping dark pearls, because the two are sold side by side at very different prices. We state treatment on every product page as one of eight provenance markers, so you know which one you are buying.

How to tell a naturally dark pearl from a dyed one

A dyed pearl tends toward flat, uniform color, with darkness pooling visibly around the drill hole. A naturally dark pearl shows color that shifts as it turns, with an overtone that reads separately from the bodycolor underneath. Look at the drill hole first.

What styles of black pearl necklace are there?

Single drop and pendant

One dark pearl on a chain is the most common way to own one, and the most wearable. Because the pearl carries so much color on its own, it needs nothing else around it and works against both bare skin and a dark neckline.

Sculpted pendants

Clovers, crowns, swans and hearts set the pearl inside a worked metal form. These read as design pieces rather than as classic pearl jewelry, which suits the register dark pearls already occupy.

Spaced and floating strands

Dark pearls spaced along a fine chain give the color room to read individually rather than as a single band. This is the most modern way to wear a black pearl necklace and the easiest to layer.

What should you wear a black pearl necklace with?

A black pearl necklace is at its best against black, where the overtone separates and the pearl stops reading as a dark shape. It also works against cream, camel and navy. Under warm restaurant light the green and aubergine tones come forward noticeably, which is why dark pearls suit evening better than daylight.

Why buy a black pearl necklace from Grande Lilith

Dark pearls are where the pearl industry is least transparent, because a dyed freshwater pearl and a Tahitian pearl can look similar in a photograph and differ enormously in price. We remove that ambiguity.

  • Bodycolor, overtone and treatment listed separately on every product page, not merged into one word.
  • Tahitian pearls named to origin: French Polynesia. Never implied, never vague.
  • Partners vetted by our GIA-certified pearl specialist, on working conditions as well as quality.
  • Nickel-free, lead-free and cadmium-free settings on gold, silver and stainless steel.
  • Designed in Paris. Thirty days to change your mind, and every order arrives in a magnetic pouch.

Frequently asked questions

Are black pearls more expensive than white?

Naturally dark Tahitian pearls cost considerably more than white freshwater pearls, because they grow in a larger oyster over a longer cycle in a smaller number of locations. Dyed dark freshwater pearls sit close to white freshwater in price.

What is a peacock pearl?

Peacock describes a green overtone floating over a dark bodycolor. It is the most sought-after color in Tahitian pearls and commands the highest prices within that category. The name refers to the overtone, not to the pearl type.

Do black pearls suit every skin tone?

Yes, though they behave differently. Against fair skin the contrast is sharp and graphic. Against olive and deeper skin the overtone warms and the pearl reads softer. Neither is more correct.

How do I care for a black pearl necklace?

The same way as any pearl. Put it on after perfume and lotion have dried, wipe it with a soft damp cloth before storing, and keep it away from harder stones that scratch nacre. Dark pearls need no special treatment beyond that.

Is a black pearl necklace formal or casual?

Both, depending on scale. A single dark pearl on a fine chain is entirely wearable with denim. A large pearl or a full spaced strand reads as an evening piece and holds a room without any help.
