Akoya pearl earrings use saltwater cultured pearls grown in Pinctada fucata martensii, the Akoya oyster, primarily in Japan. Each pearl grows around a round shell bead, which is why Akoya pearls are consistently spherical in a way freshwater pearls rarely are.
That roundness matters more in earrings than anywhere else. A pair has to match each other closely, and matched roundness is exactly what Akoya delivers.
Why are Akoya pearls so bright?
