South sea pearl bracelet
The largest cultured pearls we set, strung close to the wrist. White-silver or deep golden, with the satin glow South Sea pearls are known for. This is the bracelet you notice on another woman and remember a year later.
What is a South Sea pearl bracelet?
A South Sea pearl bracelet uses cultured pearls grown in Pinctada maxima, the largest pearl-producing oyster, in the waters of Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Sizes typically run 9 to 16 mm.
At that scale a bracelet needs fewer pearls than a necklace, which makes it the least expensive way to own a matched South Sea strand.
Why is South Sea luster different?
Because the nacre is thick. A South Sea pearl grows for two to four years and lays down a nacre layer several times deeper than an Akoya pearl of the same diameter. Light enters that depth and diffuses rather than bouncing straight back.
On a wrist, where the pearls are in your own field of view all day, that inner glow is more visible than any amount of surface shine would be.
Is thick nacre an advantage on a bracelet?
It is the practical argument for South Sea at the wrist. A bracelet takes more abrasion than any other piece of jewelry, and thick nacre cannot wear through to the shell bead the way a thin layer can.
That does not make them hard-wearing in absolute terms. Nacre is still soft. It means a South Sea bracelet ages better than an Akoya one under the same treatment.
White or golden?
The silver-lipped oyster produces white through silver-white. The gold-lipped oyster produces cream through deep golden, and the deeper the gold, the rarer the pearl.
On a wrist the choice matters more than elsewhere, because arms show skin tone plainly. Golden pearls agree with warm and tanned skin. White-silver contrasts against it.
How should a pearl bracelet fit?
With about half an inch of room past your wrist measurement. Loose enough to rotate, close enough that it does not slide over the hand. Measure just below the wrist bone. Large pearls take up more of the circumference, so allow an extra half inch here.

Frequently asked questions
Can you wear a South Sea pearl bracelet every day?
Yes, and thick nacre makes it more forgiving than most. Take it off before washing dishes or applying hand cream, and wipe it with a soft damp cloth afterwards.
Should the pearls be knotted between beads?
Yes, and it matters more with valuable pearls. Knots stop them rubbing against each other and prevent a total loss if the thread breaks. Restring every few years with regular wear.
Why are South Sea pearls so expensive?
Time and risk. The oyster takes about two years to reach a size that can hold a nucleus, then two to four more to grow the pearl, in open ocean conditions where a single storm can end a harvest. Very few reach gem grade.
What size South Sea pearls suit a bracelet?
Between 9 and 11 mm. Larger pearls on a wrist knock against desks and door frames more than they would at the neck, and the extra size adds cost faster than it adds presence.
Which wrist should you wear it on?
Your non-dominant wrist takes less contact, which matters more with pearls at this price. If you wear a watch there, put the bracelet on the other arm rather than stacking the two.
