Tahitian pearl necklace

Dark pearls on a single drop, or set into clovers, crowns, swans and hearts. Tahitian pearls carry green, silver and aubergine that shift as you move, and against a dark neckline they read sharper than white ever will. The pieces here are meant to be the only thing you are wearing.

Tahitian pearl necklace

A Tahitian pearl necklace is dark without being black, and no two are dark in the same way. These pearls come out of the lagoons of French Polynesia carrying green, silver, aubergine and peacock, and nobody adds those colors afterward. If you already own a white pearl necklace, this is the one that gives you something else.

What is a Tahitian pearl necklace?

A Tahitian pearl necklace uses cultured pearls grown in the black-lipped oyster, Pinctada margaritifera. The oyster itself produces the dark nacre, so the color belongs to the animal rather than to a dye bath. They are grown only in French Polynesia and the Cook Islands.

Sizes run 8 to 16 mm, considerably larger than Akoya, because the host oyster is larger. That scale is part of why a single Tahitian pearl on a chain reads as a finished piece with nothing else needed.

Are Tahitian pearls naturally black?

Tahitian pearls get their dark color naturally, from the oyster that grows them. They are rarely true black. Most are gray, green, aubergine or blue-gray, with a secondary overtone floating over the bodycolor, and the color shifts visibly as the pearl turns.

This matters commercially, because dyed freshwater pearls are widely sold as black pearls. A dyed pearl tends toward flat, uniform color with darkness pooling around the drill hole. A Tahitian pearl shows movement. We list bodycolor, overtone and treatment separately on every product page so the distinction is visible before you buy.

What colors do Tahitian pearls come in?

  • Peacock — a green overtone over dark bodycolor. The most sought-after and the highest priced within the category.
  • Aubergine — a purple-toned overtone that warms considerably under evening light.
  • Silver and blue-gray — the coolest register, and the easiest to wear with a cool wardrobe.
  • Pistachio and green — lighter, more unusual, and the ones people ask about most.

Which Tahitian pearl necklace style should you choose?

Single pearl drops

One dark pearl on a chain. Because a Tahitian pearl carries so much color and size on its own, this is the most common way to own one and the most wearable. It works against bare skin and against a dark neckline equally.

Sculpted pendants

Clovers, crowns, swans, hearts and quatrefoils set the pearl inside a worked metal form. These read as design pieces rather than as traditional pearl jewelry, which suits the register dark pearls already occupy.

Mabe and domed forms

Tahitian Mabe pearls are grown against the shell, giving a domed face and a flat back. They deliver visible scale at a lower price than a fully round pearl of the same diameter, which is why several of our largest dark pieces are Mabe.

What should you wear a Tahitian pearl necklace with?

Against black, the overtone separates and the pearl stops reading as a dark shape. Against cream, camel and navy it reads warmer. Under warm restaurant light the green and aubergine come forward noticeably, which is why Tahitian pearls suit evening better than daylight.

Why buy a Tahitian pearl necklace from Grande Lilith

Tahitian is the pearl category with the widest gap between what is claimed and what is sold, because a dyed freshwater pearl photographs similarly and costs a fraction as much.

  • Origin named: French Polynesia. Not "Tahitian-style" or "black pearl" without qualification.
  • Bodycolor, overtone and treatment listed separately, not collapsed into a single word.

  • Nickel-free, lead-free and cadmium-free settings on solid 18k gold, 925 sterling silver and stainless steel.

Frequently asked questions

Why are Tahitian pearls expensive?

They grow in a limited geography, in a larger oyster over a longer cycle, with a low proportion of gem-grade results. Add the difficulty of matching color across multiple pearls and the price follows. A single pearl on a chain is the affordable entry point.

Is a Tahitian pearl the same as a black pearl?

Not quite. All Tahitian pearls are dark, but not all dark pearls are Tahitian. The term black pearl is used commercially for dyed freshwater pearls as well, which is why origin and treatment need to be stated rather than assumed.

What size Tahitian pearl should I buy?

Between 9 and 11 mm is the most wearable range for a pendant. Below 9 mm the scale advantage over other pearl types disappears. Above 12 mm the pearl becomes an evening piece rather than a daily one.

Do Tahitian pearls fade?

Naturally colored Tahitian pearls do not fade, because the color is in the nacre rather than on it. Dyed pearls can lose color over years, which is another reason treatment disclosure matters at the point of purchase.

Can you wear a Tahitian pearl necklace every day?

Yes. Put it on after perfume and lotion have dried, wipe it with a soft damp cloth before storing, and keep it away from harder stones. Tahitian nacre is thick, which makes these pearls more forgiving than most for regular wear.
