White pearl necklace

A white pearl necklace is the one most women own and the one most collections start with. It goes with the navy suit, the white shirt, the black dress and everything between them, which is why it is the least likely piece to sit unworn.

What is a white pearl necklace?

A white pearl necklace uses cultured pearls with a white bodycolor, which is the base color of the pearl itself. White is not a single shade: it ranges from cool bright white through cream, and it usually carries a secondary overtone of rose, silver or ivory floating above the bodycolor.

That overtone is what makes two white pearls look different from each other, and it is worth checking before you buy, because it decides whether the necklace reads warm or cool against your skin.

Which white pearl overtone suits you?

  • Rose overtone — a pink cast over white. Warms noticeably under candlelight and flatters fair and pink-toned complexions.
  • Silver overtone — cool and crisp. Reads modern, and sits well with silver-toned metal and a cool wardrobe.
  • Ivory and cream — the warmest register. Suits olive and golden complexions and pairs naturally with gold.

We list bodycolor and overtone as two separate markers on every product page, rather than describing everything simply as white.

Which white pearl necklace style should you choose?

Single pendants

One white pearl on a chain. The most versatile construction there is and the one most people buy first. It layers under a shirt, over a knit, and beside chains you already own.

Floating and spaced strands

Pearls set at intervals along a fine chain so they appear to rest directly on the skin. Lighter than a continuous strand and considerably easier to wear with everyday clothes.

Chokers and beaded strands

Pearls strung continuously, either high at the throat or falling to the collarbone. This is the classic reading, and where white pearls have the most presence.

Layered and long styles

Two or three lengths balanced on one clasp, or a long rope you can double. White pearls layer more easily than any other color, since nothing clashes with them.

Which pearl types come in white?

Almost all of them. Freshwater pearls from Zhuji give the widest choice of shapes and sizes. Akoya pearls from Japan give the sharpest mirror luster. South Sea pearls give the largest white pearls grown, in a soft satin white-silver.

Every pearl is a real cultured pearl, with type, origin, bodycolor, overtone, shape, size, grade and treatment stated on the product page.

Why buy a white pearl necklace from Grande Lilith

White is the most commoditized color in the pearl market. Almost everyone sells a white pearl necklace, and almost nobody tells you which white.

  • Bodycolor and overtone listed as separate markers, so you know whether the white is cool, rose or cream before it arrives.
  • Eight provenance markers in total, including grade and treatment.
  • Sourcing named to place: Zhuji, Japan, French Polynesia.
  • Partners vetted by our GIA-certified pearl specialist, on working conditions as well as quality.
  • Designed in Paris. Thirty days to change your mind, and every order arrives in a magnetic pouch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between white and cream pearls?

Cream is a warmer bodycolor, not a lower grade. Neither is better. Cream tends to suit warm and olive complexions and pairs naturally with gold. Bright white suits cool complexions and silver-toned metal.

Do white pearls turn yellow?

They can over decades, if repeatedly exposed to perfume, cosmetics and body oils without cleaning. Wiping the necklace with a soft damp cloth after wearing prevents almost all of it, and this is the single most useful habit for keeping white pearls white.

Are whiter pearls better quality?

No. Color is preference. Quality is luster first, then surface cleanliness, nacre thickness and matching. A cream pearl with sharp luster is a better pearl than a bright white one without it.

What length white pearl necklace is most useful?

Sixteen to eighteen inches. It falls at or just below the collarbone and works with a crew neck, an open collar and a blazer without adjustment. Buy this length first, and add a choker or a long strand once you know what you reach for.

Are white pearls bleached?

Most Akoya pearls on the market are bleached and polished as standard industry practice, and many freshwater pearls are as well. This is accepted and does not affect authenticity. What matters is that it is stated, which is why treatment appears on every product page.
