Stainless steel pearl earrings

These are the earrings you keep in. Stainless steel is hypoallergenic and holds its finish, so a pair goes from a workout to a working day without you thinking about it once.

What are stainless steel pearl earrings?

Stainless steel pearl earrings set cultured pearls on steel posts and fittings rather than gold or silver. Jewelry-grade stainless steel is an alloy of iron and chromium, and the chromium forms a thin oxide layer that reforms whenever the surface is scratched.

That self-repairing surface is why steel does not tarnish like silver or wear through like plating. On an earring post, which sits inside a piercing, that property matters more than anywhere else in jewelry.

Why does the post matter most?

Because it is the part inside your ear. When plating wears through on a post, the base metal underneath makes direct contact with broken skin, which is the most common reason people suddenly react to earrings they have worn happily for years.

Solid steel has no layer to lose. Our posts and fastenings are nickel-free, lead-free and cadmium-free throughout.

Is stainless steel good for sensitive ears?

It is the most reliable choice there is for reactive skin. Almost all metal sensitivity is a reaction to nickel, and nickel-free steel removes the cause rather than managing it.

If you have reacted to costume earrings before, this is where to start rather than assuming you cannot wear earrings at all.

Which stainless steel pearl earring style should you choose?

Studs

The pair you genuinely leave in. Between 7 and 8 mm suits most ears, and a button pearl sits flattest against the lobe, which is the most comfortable shape for constant wear.

Hoops and huggies

Steel holds a sharper line than plated metal at the same thickness, which is what keeps a fine hoop looking precise after a year rather than flimsy.

Drops and dangles

Movement means more contact between metal parts, so a hard alloy holds up better over years. Steel is the most practical metal for an articulated earring that swings all day.

Frequently asked questions

Can you sleep in stainless steel pearl earrings?

The steel will be fine, and it is the metal least likely to irritate a piercing overnight. The pearl is the limiting factor, since nacre is soft and constant pressure against a pillow shows over years. Button pearls are the most comfortable shape for it.

Can you exercise in them?

Steel does not react with sweat, so the metal is no problem. Wipe the pearls with a soft cloth afterwards, since sweat is mildly acidic and leaving it on nacre over years dulls the surface.

Does stainless steel tarnish?

No. The chromium oxide layer reforms whenever the surface is scratched, so the finish repairs itself. Silver tarnishes and plating wears off. Steel does neither.

Is steel too heavy for earrings?

Steel is denser than silver but earrings use very little metal, so the difference is negligible at this scale. Weight in a pearl earring comes from the pearl and the length of the drop, not from the alloy.

How do you clean steel pearl earrings?

Wipe them with a soft damp cloth after wearing. The steel needs nothing more. Never use an ultrasonic cleaner or a jewelry dip, since those exist for metal and destroy nacre.
