Pearl necklace

A pearl necklace is the piece most women own longest. It outlasts trends because it was never part of one, and it works at the collarbone on a Tuesday morning as easily as it does under evening light. This collection covers every length, every pearl type and every metal we set, so you can find the one that fits the life you actually live.

What is a pearl necklace?

A pearl necklace is any necklace where cultured pearls carry the design, whether that means a single pearl on a chain or a full strand knotted between every bead. The word covers a wide range: chokers, pendants, floating strands, layered chains and long ropes are all pearl necklaces, and they behave very differently on the body.

Every pearl in this collection is a real cultured pearl, grown inside a living mollusk. Cultured pearls are not imitations. A technician places a nucleus or a piece of mantle tissue inside the mollusk, and the animal deposits layer after layer of nacre around it over months or years. That nacre is what produces luster, and luster is what separates a pearl you keep from one you forget.

Which pearl necklace length should you choose?

Length changes what a pearl necklace does more than any other decision. The same pearls read formal at one length and relaxed at another, so it is worth choosing this before choosing pearl type or color.

Pearl choker necklace

A pearl choker sits high at the base of the throat, above the neckline rather than disappearing into it. Nothing about a choker looks accidental, which is exactly why people wear them. It suits an open collar, a bare shoulder or a crew neck, and it photographs well because it holds a clean horizontal line.

Pearl pendant necklace

A pearl pendant necklace places one pearl on a chain, sitting where the eye already travels. This is the most adaptable style we make and the one most women buy first. It layers under a shirt, over a knit, and beside other chains without competing with them.

Pearl drop necklace

A pearl drop necklace uses a tapered pearl that is narrow at the top and weighted at the base. That shape points down the line of the neckline instead of sitting flat against it, which is why drop pearls are the most flattering choice to wear with an open collar.

Layered pearl necklace

A layered pearl necklace gives you two or three lengths already balanced on a single clasp. It creates depth without asking you to work out proportions in front of a mirror, and it is the fastest way to make a plain outfit look considered.

Long pearl necklace

A long pearl necklace can be worn straight down, doubled at the collarbone, or knotted once and left. One length gives you three necklaces depending on the morning, which makes it the most versatile piece in this collection.

Chunky pearl necklace

A chunky pearl necklace uses large pearls and heavy links and is designed to be the only thing you put on. It turns a white shirt into an outfit and needs nothing beside it.

Which type of pearl is right for you?

Pearl type determines color range, shape, size and price more than anything else. We name the origin of every pearl we set, because you should be able to check it rather than take our word for it.

  • Freshwater pearl necklace — grown in mussels in Zhuji, China. The widest range of shapes and colors we carry, and where most collections begin.
  • Akoya pearl necklace — grown in Japan around a round shell bead. Consistently spherical, white, and mirror-bright. This is the classic strand most people picture.
  • Tahitian pearl necklace — grown in the black-lipped oyster in French Polynesia. Dark bodycolors with green, silver, aubergine and peacock overtones that belong to the oyster, not to a dye bath.
  • South Sea pearl necklace — the largest cultured pearls grown, in white-silver or deep golden, with a soft satin luster rather than a sharp one.
  • Baroque pearl necklace — irregular by nature, so no two pieces hang quite alike. A shape rather than an origin, available across several pearl types.
  • Mother of pearl necklace — the shell itself, cut and polished flat. The same nacre a pearl is made of, in shapes a round pearl cannot take.

What pearl color suits you best?

A white pearl necklace reads clean against every skin tone and every wardrobe, which is why it remains the most bought. A black pearl necklace sharpens against dark clothing and warms against skin. A pink pearl necklace flatters where white contrasts, warming the complexion instead of standing apart from it. A golden pearl necklace runs from pale champagne to deep amber, and almost nobody is wearing one.

Gold, silver or stainless steel?

A gold pearl necklace in solid 18k gold warms the cream tones in nacre and does not wear thin at the clasp. A silver pearl necklace in 925 sterling silver keeps the luster sharp and the chain line precise. A stainless steel pearl necklace holds its finish through commutes, coat collars and everything you forget to take off, which makes it the practical choice for daily wear.

Why buy a pearl necklace from Grande Lilith

Most pearl retailers tell you a pearl is real and stop there. We publish eight provenance markers on every product page: type, origin, bodycolor, overtone, shape, size, grade and treatment. Treatment in particular is where the industry stays quiet, and where a buyer most needs the truth.

  • Sourcing you can check. Freshwater pearls from Zhuji, Akoya from Japan, Tahitian from French Polynesia. Named, not implied.
  • Partners vetted by our GIA-certified pearl specialist, on working conditions as well as quality.
  • Nickel-free, lead-free and cadmium-free settings, because a necklace you take off by noon is not a necklace you own.
  • Designed in Paris, priced for a woman buying it for herself rather than waiting to be given one.
  • Thirty days to change your mind, and every order arrives in a magnetic pouch.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know a pearl necklace is real?

Rub a pearl lightly against the edge of a front tooth. A real cultured pearl feels gritty, because nacre is built from microscopic overlapping crystal platelets. An imitation feels smooth, because a coating is smooth. Every pearl in this collection is a real cultured pearl, and the few imitation pieces we sell are labeled as such.

What length pearl necklace is most versatile?

Sixteen to eighteen inches. That length falls at or just below the collarbone and works with a crew neck, an open collar and a blazer without adjustment. Longer strands need a neckline chosen around them.

Can I wear a pearl necklace every day?

Yes. Put it on after perfume and lotion have dried, and wipe it with a soft cloth before putting it away. Nacre is a natural material and dulls with repeated contact with alcohol and acid, so the order you dress in matters more than anything else.

What makes one pearl necklace better than another?

Luster, before anything else. Look at the sharpness of the reflection on the pearl's own surface. After luster comes surface cleanliness, nacre thickness, and how closely the pearls match one another along the strand. Size and shape are preference, not quality.

Are pearl necklaces still in style?

Pearls have moved out of the occasion box and into daily wear, worn with denim and a knit as readily as with a silk dress. The pieces that feel current are the ones with a clear point of view about shape and length, rather than the matched formal strand of forty years ago.
