Pearl jewelry for Summer holidays

Pearls came out of the water, so they belong on a boat, on a terrace, on a warm evening with bare shoulders. Everything here fits in one pouch, none of it tangles, and all of it looks better against a tan than it does in a fitting room.

What pearl jewelry works for summer?

Anything light enough to forget and robust enough to travel. Shell charms, star drops, long strands you can double, stacking bracelets and studs you can sleep in. Bare shoulders and open necklines give jewelry more room than any other season, which is why summer suits longer lengths and layering.

Mother of pearl earns its place here in particular. It is lighter than a solid pearl at the same size, which matters when it is hot and you are wearing something for twelve hours.

The one rule that matters: sunscreen first

Sunscreen is the single most common cause of damage to summer jewelry. The oils and alcohols in it dull nacre on contact, and once the surface has gone cloudy it does not come back.

Apply sunscreen, let it absorb completely, then put the jewelry on. Wipe every piece with a soft damp cloth at the end of the day. Those two habits prevent almost all summer damage.

Can you swim in pearls?

Take them off first. Chlorine is the worst offender and attacks nacre directly. Salt water is less aggressive but leaves deposits that dull the surface as they dry. Sand scratches, because nacre is soft.

Put the pieces back on once you have dried off, which is also when they look their best against warm skin.

How to pack pearl jewelry for travel

  • Lay necklaces flat in a pouch rather than folding them, so the thread is not bent at one point for a week.
  • Keep pearls separate from harder pieces. Nacre scratches against metal and stones in a shared bag.
  • Avoid airtight plastic. Nacre needs some humidity, and long sealed storage in a hot climate can dry it out.
  • Carry it rather than checking it, which is about theft rather than about pearls.

What to wear where

Daytime and beach

Studs, small hoops, stacked bracelets and shell charms. Nothing you would mind taking off quickly, and nothing that needs adjusting when you move.

Evening on a terrace

A long strand doubled, or a single drop earring against bare shoulders. Warm low light brings out the overtone in a pearl more than daylight does, which is why dark pearls come into their own after sunset.

Why buy summer pearl jewelry from Grande Lilith

  • Eight provenance markers on every product page: type, origin, bodycolor, overtone, shape, size, grade and treatment.
  • Mother of pearl named as mother of pearl, never implied to be pearl.
  • Sourcing named to place: Zhuji, Japan, French Polynesia.
  • Nickel-free, lead-free and cadmium-free throughout, which matters more in heat when skin reacts more readily.
  • Designed in Paris. Thirty days to change your mind, and every order arrives in a magnetic pouch that travels well.

Frequently asked questions

Does heat damage pearls?

Prolonged dry heat can, because nacre contains a small amount of water and can crack if it dries out completely. A hot car dashboard or a closed suitcase in direct sun is worth avoiding. Ordinary summer weather is not a problem.

Does sweat damage pearls?

Only over time and only if it is left on. Sweat is mildly acidic, so wiping pieces with a soft damp cloth at the end of a hot day is enough. This matters more for necklaces than for earrings.

Do pearls look different against a tan?

White pearls contrast more sharply and read brighter. Golden and peach pearls warm and blend, which some people prefer. This is the one time of year when a golden pearl outperforms a white one on most skin.

What is the easiest piece to travel with?

A pair of studs and one long strand. The studs cover every day, the strand doubles for evening, and both fit in a pocket of a bag without tangling or needing care.

Can you wear pearls in the shower?

No. Soap and shampoo dull nacre, and prolonged water exposure weakens the silk thread in strung pieces. Take pearls off before showering, at home and on holiday equally.
