What is mother of pearl?
Mother of pearl is the iridescent inner lining of a mollusk shell. It is nacre, the identical material a pearl is made of, laid down by the same animal for the same purpose: to line the inside of its own shell smoothly.
The difference from a pearl is formation, not substance. A pearl forms as a free body inside the mollusk. Mother of pearl forms as a sheet against the shell wall, and is cut and polished into shape afterwards.
Where does the name come from?
From the observation that the shell lining is what produces the pearl. The mollusk builds both from the same secretion, so the shell is quite literally the mother of the pearl inside it.
The French say nacre for both, which is more accurate and less romantic.
Why choose mother of pearl?
Three things it does that a pearl cannot. Shape, because a flat sheet can be cut into shells, stars, petals and discs. Scale, because a wide face costs a fraction of what an equivalent pearl would. And weight, because shell is light enough that a large earring stays comfortable for twelve hours.

How to care for mother of pearl
The same way as a pearl, because it is the same material. It sits at 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs hardness scale, so it scratches against metal and harder stones and should be stored separately.
Wipe it with a soft damp cloth rather than dipping it in any solution, and never use an ultrasonic cleaner, which separates the nacre layers.
