What is a gold pearl necklace?

Solid gold, gold plated or gold vermeil?
The distinction is worth understanding before you buy anything described as gold.
- Solid 18k gold — gold throughout. It cannot wear off, because there is no other metal underneath. This is what we use.
- Gold vermeil — a thick gold layer over sterling silver. Better than plating, but still a layer with a different metal beneath it.
- Gold plated — a thin gold layer over brass or steel. It wears through at friction points, usually at the clasp first.
Why does gold suit pearls?
Gold picks up the cream and rose tones already present in nacre and pushes them forward, so the pearl reads warmer rather than sitting next to the metal as a separate object. Cool metals do the opposite: they sharpen the luster and hold the pearl at a distance.
This is most visible with white and golden pearls. Against a dark Tahitian pearl, gold creates contrast rather than continuity, which is its own effect and a deliberate one.

Is 18k gold better than 14k?
Not better, different. 18k contains more pure gold, so the color is deeper and warmer. 14k contains more alloy, so it is harder and more scratch resistant. For a necklace, which takes less abrasion than a ring, 18k is the more common choice.
Does solid gold tarnish?
No. Gold does not oxidize, which is why it has been used in jewelry for thousands of years. What tarnishes is silver, and what wears off is plating. Solid 18k gold will look the same in twenty years as it does now.
Does gold suit every skin tone?
Gold is generally more flattering on warm and olive complexions, and silver on cool ones, but this is a guideline rather than a rule. What matters more is which metal the rest of your jewelry already is, since mixing reads as a decision only when it is done consistently.
Is a solid gold pearl necklace worth the price?
If you plan to wear it for years, yes. Plating fails at friction points and cannot be restored without replating the whole piece. Solid gold has no layer to lose, so the necklace ages rather than degrades.
Can you shower in a solid gold pearl necklace?
