Button Pearl earrings

A button pearl is flattened on one side, so it sits against the lobe instead of standing off it. That single difference is why button pearl earrings are the pair most women end up wearing more than any other.

What is a button pearl?

A button pearl is a cultured pearl that is round when viewed from the front and flattened from the side, like a slightly compressed sphere. It is a shape classification rather than a grade or an origin.

Button pearls occur most often in freshwater mussels, which grow pearls without a round bead nucleus and therefore produce a much wider range of shapes than saltwater oysters do.

Why do button pearls suit earrings so well?

Because the flat back sits flush. A round pearl stands proud of the lobe, which catches slightly more light but also catches on pillows, headsets, scarves and coat collars.

A button pearl gives you the same visible diameter from the front at roughly half the projection. If you sleep in your earrings, wear headphones for hours, or simply want a pair you stop noticing, this is the shape to choose.

Are button pearls lower quality than round?

No. Round pearls cost more because roundness is rare, not because the nacre is better. Quality is luster first, then surface cleanliness and nacre thickness, and a button pearl is judged on exactly the same criteria.

In earrings the price difference is largely invisible anyway, since almost nobody sees the side of your earring.

Which button pearl earring style should you choose?

Plain studs

A single button pearl on a post. The most comfortable earring construction there is, and the one to buy if you rarely take earrings out.

Clusters

Several button pearls grouped together. Flat backs let them sit close against each other without the gaps that round pearls leave, which is why clusters are usually built from buttons.

Halos and set forms

A button pearl framed by metal or set into a flower, a sunburst or a halo. The flat profile keeps the whole piece low, so a decorative setting stays wearable rather than becoming bulky.

Frequently asked questions

Can you sleep in button pearl earrings?

They are the most comfortable pearl earring for it, because the flat back means less pressure between the pearl and the pillow. Bear in mind that nacre is soft, so constant pressure over years will eventually show.

Do button pearls look flat from the front?

No. From the front a button pearl reads as a full circle, exactly like a round one. The flattening is only visible in profile, and only if someone is looking at the side of your ear.

What size button pearl should I buy?

Between 7 and 9 mm suits most ears. Because a button pearl projects less, you can go slightly larger than you would in a round pearl without the earring becoming physically obtrusive.

Are button pearls good for a second piercing?

They are the best shape for it. A low profile clears the ear cartilage and does not knock against a hoop or a stud in the piercing next to it.

Are button pearls cheaper than round pearls?

Usually, because roundness carries a scarcity premium that a button shape does not. You are paying for the same nacre with less rarity attached to the geometry.
